The Bathroom Floor

I distinctly remember the night that Mom got out my sleeping bag and I slept on the bathroom floor. Our bathroom had carpet - not hard tile - and a heat vent, so it wasn't all bad. Unfortunately, the reason I was there was because I was hurling all night, and it was easier to sleep there, than to keep getting out of bed.

Well, my sweet boy Josiah is sleeping on our linoleum bathroom floor tonight. A floor that already has pee on the bath rug because one of the five of us missed the toilet earlier. But I couldn't convince Josiah to give up sleeping there. So I put a towel over the pee.

I tried to convince him that his bed would be more comfortable and that I could give him "the bowl," but I gave up when I remembered how cozy I was on the floor that night so long ago - and that I was about 8 years old, like him - and that it's so much easier than getting out of bed.

If you don't yet have kids, don't let this scare you off. You truly do amazing things as a mom, things you would NEVER imagine being o.k. with. See, when your first child is born, a dormant gene is awakened in you, and suddenly you have super powers: the ability to find lost items, calm a raging baby, catch poop in your bare hands, get thrown up on and kiss the head of the one doing the throwing. . . Yes, you cringe and tell funny stories after the fact, but in the heat of the moment, God gives you what you need.

Signing off for now - not sure how much sleep I'll get tonight - but that's another one of the mom super powers: the ability to function with less sleep than you ever dreamed possible. So, to all of you out there sleeping tonight, sweet dreams.
