I've been reading a new book. It's about Sabbath rest. It's good, and I'll probably talk more about it in later posts. For tonight, I just wanted to leave a brief note. One of the things the book has been talking about is simply noticing the things around you. Living in the moment and not missing it. So today I made an effort to notice my kids. When they were around, to see them. To enjoy their smiles and hugs. To pay attention to what they were doing. I found myself making many more positive comments as I noticed them more.
Tonight, as I tucked them in bed, it was a joyful time. We were laughing together, teasing, praying, having a great end to the day. It was in that moment that I realized that the "noticing" had made for a much better day. They felt loved, I felt happier. . .
So try it - be intentional - notice the people and beauty around you, and see if it gives you a more restful soul.
In Quaker practice, we might describe this as "mindfulness." It is a great practice to get into.
